Explain the quote... the court appointed Atticus to defend him. Atticus aimed to defend him. thats what they didn't like about it. It was confusing

It is saying that Atticus was defending the person who was presumed guilty in the eyes of some people, and as I have read this book the people were startled that he was actually defending him because he was a man of color
