On this day in 1765, in New York, the Stamp Act Congress gathered. As a result of that gathering, nine Colonies proclaimed that the English Crown had no right to tax Americans who were not represented in the British Parliament.
Instead, the British administration contended that the colonists had virtual representation in Parliament, just like the thousands of British people who were denied the right to vote or towns like Birmingham and Manchester that were not represented in the House of Commons.
The French and Indian War (1754–1763) in America and the Seven Years' War (1756–1763) in England each increased the country's debt. Parliament made the first decision to tax the colonists directly in order to partially offset the costs that Britain suffered in defending its American colonies.
The expression was used in opposition to the imposition of tariffs on in-demand items. The colonists were further incensed by the lack of a voice in politics to protest taxes. Since the colonists were living under British control, the British claimed, they were already essentially represented in the parliament.
