Kyle has just finished playing his 6th game of the season (but there will be additional games to play before the season is over). He scores 4 points in this 6th game, bringing his per-game average down to 9 points. We need to write a formula for this average:
sum of all points scored by Kyle a+b+c+d+e+4
------------------------------------------- = ------------------------- = 9 points per game
6 games 6 games
This could also be written as a+b+c+d+e+4=(9 points/game)(6 games), or
a+b+c+d+e+4 = 54 points, or a+b+c+d+e = 50 points.
Now we have to think about the median. Since n (the number of scores) is an even number, we find the median of these scores as follows:
1) arrange the scores in ascending order (we always do this when finding a median score)
2) take the two middle scores, add them together and divide by 2, to determine the median score
I am posting this discussion now to ensure we don't lose it (since my Internet connection has not been dependable).
