The law that states rock layers closest to the surface are the newest or youngest rock is "law of superposition".
Superposition is the name for the perception that given a heap of layers, or beds, of sedimentary rocks, more established beds are found beneath more youthful beds (insofar as there has been no unsettling influence of the beds).
One of the real standards of stratigraphy is that inside a grouping of layers of sedimentary shake, the most seasoned layer is at the base and that the layers are dynamically more youthful with climbing request in the succession. This is named the law of superposition and is one of the immense general standards of geology.
