It is characterized by a semi-arid to continental climate. It has hot summers and cold winters. Its climate is both too dry to support a forest but not dry enough to become a desert.
The steppe regions are classified based on their location. There are the Cold Steppe and Subtropical Steppe.
Cold steppe regions are found in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Central USA, Western Canada, northern part of Mexico, North and South America.
Subtropical steppe regions are found in Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America.
