The peripheral nervous system (PNS), together with the central nervous system (CNS), is one of two parts that make up an animal's nervous system (CNS). Outside of the brain and spinal cord, the PNS comprises of the nerves and ganglia.
The primary job of the PNS is to convey information between the brain and spinal cord and the rest of the body via connecting the CNS to the limbs and organs. The PNS, unlike the CNS, is not shielded by the skull, spinal column, or blood-brain barrier, leaving it vulnerable to poisons and mechanical harm.
The somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system are two subsystems of the peripheral nervous system. With the exception of the optic nerve (cranial nerve II) and the retina, the cranial nerves make up the PNS in the somatic nervous system. The second cranial nerve is a tract of the diencephalon and not a real peripheral nerve.
