Thoreau saw that society impedes both simplicity and the inner life, just as he understood that living simply in nature allows a man to live fully. Because he wanted to live intentionally, face only the most important truths of life, learn what they had to teach, and assess if he had truly lived, Thoreau moved into the woods.
A true regard for the individual is something that can be attained during the transition from an absolute to a limited monarchy and from a limited monarchy to a democracy. Since living is so precious, I didn't want to live anything else than life. I desired to live deeply and extract all the life's marrow.
