Born in 1823, Phineas Gage worked as a foreman on American railroad projects. Gage was 25 years old and working in Cavendish, Vermont, when the Rutland and Burlington Railroad was being prepared by blasting rocks to create a roadbed. He was in charge of a workforce at the time.
A hole was filled with explosive powder using an iron tamping rod to do this. However, as he was doing so, the tamping iron he was using exploded from the hole where it was in the hole and slammed into Gage's left side of the face from the bottom up.
The 43-inch-long, 1.24-inch-diameter iron rod pierced Gage's left cheek before passing behind his left eye, entering into his left side brain, and exiting his skull 80 feet away.
Following the incident, Gage experienced a momentary convulsion of the arms and legs after being hurled to the ground by the power of the iron rod. But after a little while, Gage managed to stand up, speak, and move with only a little help to a neighboring cart so he could go into town.
