In any reaction the reactants are added and then the products are formed. There is always a particular rate of reaction and the reaction moves forward at that rate.

The forward reaction means that the product is formed at that particular rate.

The backward reaction is the when the products are coming back to its original state.

This can be also understood as products coming back in the form of reactants.

There is a continuous reaction happening of products being formed from reactants. But the reversible reaction happens when the reactants are being formed from products.

To ensure that the reaction doesn't go in backward direction, the equilibrium constant is studied.

The equilibrium constant helps to maintain an equilibrium in the reaction. The equilibrium is disturbed by the reaction quotient. The direction in which the reaction will occur will be determined if the reaction quotient is greater or less than equilibrium constant.

Hence, when the reaction quotient is greater than equilibrium constant, the reverse reaction is being favored.
