Peary set off from New York on the SS Roosevelt in July 1908 for his final Arctic trip, with the goal of reaching the North Pole. He spent the winter on Ellesmere Island with 23 other guys. Peary departed in a northerly direction on February 28, 2009, with his dog teams and sleds. On his second polar expedition, Henson, a young African American seaman, accompanied him. In order to investigate what came to be known as "Peary Land," their crew traveled by dogsled for a considerable distance to the northeast of Greenland.
The explorers started their journey to the North Pole in 1893, and on their second try, in 1906, they were just 150 miles from their goal when they nearly reached latitude 88 degrees north. Peary was looking to employ a helper for his planned Central American trip. He had been contracted by the American government to investigate the viability of constructing a canal there to link the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Henson's maritime background impressed Peary, who made a job offer to him.
