Hair-like projections called Cilia, trap dust pollens, and other foreign matter and prevent them from entering the nasal cavity.
Cilia trap unwanted particles along with mucus produced by serous and other glands within the membrane. Finally, the warmed air filtered from the back of the nose enters the upper part of the throat, the nasopharynx. The nasal cavity not only humidifies, warms, filters, and directs inhaled air, but also serves to protect the airways using the mucociliary system.
There are also receptors in the nasal cavity that control the sense of smell. Cilia propel the liquid layer of mucus that lines the airways. The mucus layer traps pathogens, potentially infectious microbes, and other particles and prevents them from reaching the lungs. The larynx is part of the respiratory system. This is a hollow tube that allows air to pass from the throat pharynx to the trachea on its way to the lungs.
