The purpose of the family educational rights and privacy act (ferpa) is to: have access to their children’s education records, the right to seek to have the records amended.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal statute that grants parents access to their children's educational records, the right  are to request that the records be amended, and so the right to some degree of control over the disclosure of personally to identifiable information from those records. The Educational rights under FERPA to move from the parents to the student when they turn 18 or enroll in a postsecondary institution at any age (an "eligible student"). The 20 U.S.C. contains the FERPA law. 1232g, and the FERPA rules can be found at 34 CFR Part 99.
