An aspect of the character strengths classification scheme that Patterson and Seligman developed as a complement to the DSM includes that the strengths of character assessment of certain characteristics such as wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence are important factors to assess and consider when working with mental disorders.

Patterson has implemented his work on strengths in character to lay out a positive model which will be able to complement and support the DSM model. This model proved to be more universal and systematic. His theory-based approach included all those functions which will work along the Character strength model.

Seligman also identified character strengths and he divided those into six different virtues namely wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence.
