Fragmentation is the term used when a composer shortens a motive by using only a part of it or by taking away notes.

In the world of music, Fragmentation means the division of the ideas of music which can be in the form of gesture, motive, or theme into various segments. It is a commonly used method used in both types of music namely Tonal and Atonal music and is the very frequently used method of closure and development of music.

It is the most common method which involves the process of reducing largely scaled musical ideas into their various essential forms. It is a tool that a composer uses to increase the melody in his/her musical work with less or very little effort. There are mainly two types of Fragmentation that can be used in musical ideas to increase their melody. They are:
