The Great Chicago Fire which is also referred to as the Chicago Fire of 1871 led a huge devastating effect on the life of people residing in Chicago. It led to the decline in the growth of the city of Chicago and reversed all its developmental progress.
The fire began in October 8 and burned the city till October 10. There were many more fires that had occurred earlier but none of them had such a huge effect. The fire first broke down on the western outskirts of the city. No one knows the exact reason why the fire broke out but within several minutes of starting the fire, its blaze ran all over the city. Firefighters and fire equipment were not on time and by the time they reached fire had reached most parts of the city.
The fire was so huge that even fireproof buildings and stones could not hold its wrath, and all exploded one by one. The firefighters were unable to do a thing to it. The natural elements like rain and lake water were the ones to make cease on its path and it halted on the morning of October 10.
The fire is considered the most devastating and biggest fire in the history of America. This fire took a life toll of about 300 and destroyed around 18000 buildings and it covered an area of around 3 to 4 miles. The total damage incurred to Chicago was around 200 million and this had a huge impact on the economy of Chicago. Many people lost their lives, and many lost their place of residence.
Lack of food, medicinal facilities, and no roof over their head made people lose their willpower and they didn't know where to go and what to do. Nearly about 1 lac people became homeless.
However, efforts were made and soon the rebuilding process of Chicago started, and top-class architects and engineers were employed for the process. The fire had a huge impact on the development of Chicago and can truly be recognized as the 'Great Chicago fire' due to the devasting effects it caused.
