In the early 1900s, much of the farmland across the south had been depleted of vital nutrients, because cotton was planted in the same fields over and over. George Washington carver was an important voice urging farmers to replenish their soil using a method known as Crop Rotation, wherein other plants, like peanuts and sweet potatoes, would be planted in the cotton fields periodically.
Crop Rotation is a biological rejuvenation process adopted by farmers in which different kinds of crops are planted on the given area of land/field/farm to improve the health of the soil by allowing the nutrients to replenish as the crops grow and also enables pest control without higher use of pesticides.
For example, let us suppose a 3-year cropping pattern wherein the farmer begins with planting vegetables such as carrots, radish, onions, etc. in the field. These crops enable the addition of potassium and phosphorus minerals into the soil. The next year he can use leguminous plants in his fields. This ensures more nitrogen fixation thus more nitrogen enters the soil.
During this period the elements which were used in the previous cycle will get an ample amount of time to replenish. the next year crops which require less amount of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus can be planted. Thus, this cycle can be maintained by cropping crops that require a different amount of nutrients to grow to ensure a high yield of crop due to high fertility of soil and replenishment of elements at the same time.
