William Saroyan was an Armenian-American novelist, playwright, and short story writer. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1940 and the Academy Award for Best Story in 1943 for Human Comedy.

In six days of 1939, William Saroyan turned out "The Time of Your Life," a play which won both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Drama Critics Circle award. The author turned down the Pulitzer because he said he resented "wealth patronizing art." The play was made into a 1948 movie starring James Cagney.These stories were popular during the Great Depression. Saroyan grew up in Fresno, the center of Armenian-Americans in California, where many of his works are set (although he sometimes gave the city a fictional name).
