What is diabetes?

Diabetes is defined as a metabolic disorder that occurs when there is increased level of glucose in the blood which occurs due to absence of insulin or the failure of the body cells to recognise the insulin produced.

The medication that is used for the management of diabetes include the following:

  • Metformin.

  • Sulfonylureas.

  • Glinides.

  • α-Glucosidase inhibitors.

  • Thiazolidinediones.

  • Insulin.

When administering insulin, the blood glucose level needs to be monitored to prevent hypoglycemic shock.

Hypoglycemic shock is the drastic reduction of blood glucose levels which can be a fatal condition.
