A student places 12.8 mL of water in a graduated cylinder. The mass of the water and the graduated cylinder is found to be 46.304 grams, and then the balance is tared. After adding a number of metal pellets to the graduated cylinder, the liquid level in the cylinder is now 25.5 mL. The cylinder with the water and metal pellets is placed back on the balance, and the measured mass is 75.440 grams. Calculate the density of the metal pellets in g/mL.

Respuesta :

The density of the metal palates is 2.29 g/mL.

What is density?

The term density refers to the ratio of the mass to the volume of a body. We know that the volume of a solid can easily be obtained by the use of the displacement method in which water is ejected from the vessel.

Hence;

Mass of the metal pellets is =  75.440 grams - 46.304 grams= 29.136 grams

Volume of the water = 25.5 mL - 12.8 mL = 12.7 mL

Hence density = mass/volume = 29.136 grams/12.7 mL = 2.29 g/mL
