Respuesta :

The final velocity of the carts is 3 m/s.

What is the principle of conservation of momentum?

Recall that from the principle of  conservation of momentum, we know that the momentum after collision is equal to the momentum before collisions thus the momentum remains unchanged during collision.

Thus;

m1u1 + m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2

m1 and m2 are the masses of the carts

u1 and u2 are the initial velocities of the carts

v1 and v2 are the final velocities of the carts

Therefore;

(3 * 4) +  ( 1 * 0) = (3 + 1 ) v

v = 12/4

v = 3 m/s
