What was the Three-fifths compromise?

This was a compromise made when the Constitution was being created that every 5 enslaved African American would be counted as three people for the purpose of representation in Congress.

The reason this happened was that the North did not believe it was fair for the South to be able to use African Americans to increase their population for representation without them being free.

The population total for representation in Congress in 1860 was therefore:

= 300,000 + (400,000 x 3/5)

= 300,000 + 240,000

= 540,000 people
