Bituminous coal, sub-bituminous coal, or lignite are all burnt in coal-fired power plants. Coal is burned to create heat, which is then utilised to turn water into high-pressure steam that powers a turbine to generate electricity.

All of the solar energy that has been stored in coal is converted into thermal energy and released as heat when it is burned. However, this chemical reaction also results in the production of greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide from coal, which are bad for the environment. Decarbonizing our electrical grid so implies giving up fuel sources that release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
