The fall of Roman empire in the Fifth century caused decline in urban settlements.

The Roman empire's economic engine came to a halt as the  empire's borders were eventually reached. The Romans advanced to other Middle Eastern empires and Germanic tribes in the north. The empire had no economy without the military economic engine in motion.

Rome is sacked in 410 AD by the Visigoths. Most people associate this act with the fall of the empire, but by the time the Goths arrived, Rome was in serious decline, with many residents starving. Outside the walls, the invaders destroyed the aqueducts and simply waited for people to starve before entering. In exchange for food, the Romans almost welcomed them.

The Goths plundered the city before fleeing, owing to a lack of food. Over the next few years, Rome's weakened state was subjected to a number of attacks. The city was plagued by disease after the sewer and water systems were destroyed, and Roman monuments were looted and used to build other structures.
