Carbon dioxide increases oxygen unloading and oxygen unloading improves carbon dioxide transport.

What is oxygen unloading?

The term "unloading" describes the process of taking oxygen out of oxyhemoglobin. Red blood cells release oxygen as blood passes through the capillaries in our metabolizing tissues. Oxygen diffuses from the red blood cell, is liberated from oxyhemoglobin, and dissolves in the plasma. Dissociation occurs when oxygen breaks free from binding in regions with lower oxygen concentrations, such as respiring cells.

Oxyhemoglobin is what is created when hemoglobin is linked to oxygen. Loading is the process through which hemoglobin binds oxygen to create oxyhemoglobin. In the lungs, that is what takes place. Oxyhemoglobin is discharged as oxygen is liberated and diffuses into the plasma, eventually reaching our cells, once it has reached the metabolizing tissues.
