On 1 May most countries celebrate International Workers Day to commemorate the victims of the Haymarket Riot in Chicago (1886). However, Americans celebrate Labor Day on the 1st Monday of September.

The International Workers Day was established by the Second International Socialist Congress in 1889 to commemorate the "Martires of Chicago". During the Haymarket Riot in 1886, workers that were holding a violent strike that claimed for 8 hours working day were repressed and shot by the police.

Many countries adopted this day to honor workers, but not the USA. In 1882, the central syndicate of New York organized a pacific protest on September 5 that gathered between 10000 and 20000 workers. This was repeated year after year. Finally, president Cleveland fixed Labor day on the first Monday of September.
