Digestion can be described as a process by which food is broken down in order to obtain energy from it. In humans, the process of digestion begins in the mouth, followed by the stomach and then the small intestine. By the time food reaches the large intestine, it has already been digested.
The saliva in the mouth contains amylase for breaking down carbohydrates. The stomach has a variety of digestive juices for breaking down food. The rest of the digestion process occurs in the small intestine which receives bile which is made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder. In the small intestine, villi are present through which nutrients are absorbed by the blood. Hence, digestion is almost completely finished in the small intestine.
After absorption, all that is left behind is waste that is passed on to the large intestine for excretion.
