The Great Oxidation Event (GOE), also known as the Oxygen Catastrophe, the Oxygen Revolution, and the Oxygen Crisis, was a time period when the amount of oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere and the shallow water first increased.

Scientists generally believe that, while oxygen is scarce in the atmosphere, it was most likely present in the waters as a result of cyanobacterial photosynthesis as early as 3 billion years ago. The introduction of free oxygen into the Earth's atmosphere led to the Great Oxidation Event. Catastrophe began producing the oxygen 2.3 billion years ago, and multicellular animals began to use it.
