What role did African American play in Reconstruction?

In regards to the Reconstruction period as a result of the Civil War, a lot of freed African Americans were known to have faced a lot of challenges to set up their own households, farm  on their own lands, set up community institutions and  others.

Note that despite all that, 16 African Americans were known to have  served in the U.S. Congress in course of the Reconstruction.

About or more than 600 more were said to have been elected to the state legislatures, and also others were said to have held local offices in the South.

Hence, African Americans in reconstruction did served in the U.S. Congress.
