Antonio loves Bassanio in the play Merchant of Venice.
The the love is betrayed and sacrificed which is not built in a strong foundation. Antonio had to sacrifice his love for the sake of Portia and therefore it seemed more superficial and regulated. Antonio agreed to pay a pound of flesh in order to make Bassanio cheerful. This is directly an act of selflessness while Bassanio, on the other hand depicts a character of self centeredness as his only motive was to achieve the desired goal irrespective of Antonio's sacrifices. Thus Merchant of Venice depicts a combination of characters who are selfless and selfish at the same time. We therefore get a glimpse of both the kinds of characters in the paly.
