Sculptures and cave paintings were a development of paleolithic period. Paleolithic period roughly starts around 40,000 years ago.
In this period there was the rise of Homo sapiens, and their ability to built tools and weapons, and use animals skins as their clothing material.
The first painting found as cave art of paleolithic period was found in Altamira in Spain, found paintings done with polychrome and charcoal drawings.
The paintings refer to the religious and symbolic functions, and the beliefs and practices of the people living there. But according to some archeologist the real meanings of those paintings were undescribed.
