British settlers were taught by members of the Powhatan confederacy to plant tobacco. Eventually, when these settlers needed more land for crops, they pushed the members of the tribe off the lands next to where they settled.
The early British settlers in Jamestown and traded with the Powhatan inhabitants, procuring native corn from them. After their chief died in 1618, tensions started to develop, particularly after the British settlers, taught how to plant tobacco by the natives, found it to be a highly profitable crop.
So, they started pushing Powhatans off their lands to expand cultivation of tobacco. This led to the Powhatan War that lasted between 1622 to 1644, and ended with the demise of Indian power.
