The American theologian Jonathan Edwards wrote the sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," which he delivered to his own church in Northampton, Massachusetts, to great effect, and again on July 8, 1741, in Enfield, Connecticut. The First Great Awakening was sparked by the preaching of this sermon. It includes references to biblical passages as well as realistic descriptions of Hell, just like Edwards' other writings. It is Edwards' most well-known piece of writing and a good illustration of his preaching approach.
