The exiles of the three speakers in The Exeter Book poems are similar in that they all reflect on how their lives have turned out.
What is the poem?
A poem is a literary text composed of verses, which may or may not rhyme. Thus, unlike prose, written in running text, the poem is written in verses that are grouped in stanzas.
A guy chooses to live at sea and must deal with loneliness and terrible weather in The Seafarer. The 'Old English elegies' poetry in the Exeter Book deal with grief, separation, and the transience of earthly things.
Mike Bintley delves into these poems, including The Wanderer and The Wife's Lament, and draws connections between the elegies and the riddles in the Exeter Book. The Exeter Book, which is housed in Exeter Cathedral library, is a 970 AD anthology of poetry and riddles.
The book, which contains 40 poems, was given to Exeter's first bishop, Leofric, in the 11th century. It is currently one of 50 important historical papers on the UK's record.
