In "The reefs" we learn that hard work is rewarding and therefore must be encouraged. This theme is perceptible when we read that Sophie, the protagonist of the story, decides to work to help preserve coral reefs that are threatened by local pollution.

This attitude proves to be a lot of work, as Sophie has no incentive from teachers and has to put in a lot of effort and spend a lot of money to put together a project that draws the attention of scientists to the preservation of reefs.

Sophie's hard work is rewarded when she succeeds in achieving her goal and making many scientists admire her project and decide to help her.
