What is receptacle?
The axis (stem), to which the floral organs are joined, is referred to as the receptacle. In most angiosperms, the floral organs are attached either in alternate succeeding whorls or in a low continuous spiral, which is frequent in primitive angiosperms. The stem's main jobs are to support the leaves, carry nutrients and water to the leaves so that photosynthesis can turn them into useful substances, and then carry those substances from the leaves to other sections of the plant, including the roots. Through the use of specific vascular tissues in the xylem, the stem transports water and nutritional minerals from the roots, where they are absorbed, to the leaves.
