Emphysema would alert the nurse of the need to use beta-adrenergic blockers cautiously

Breathlessness is a symptom of the lung disease emphysema. Alveoli, the lungs' air sacs, suffer damage in those with emphysema. The air sacs' inner walls deteriorate and tear over time, resulting in the creation of fewer, larger air gaps as opposed to more, smaller ones.

Because of its effects on Beta-2 receptors, nonselective beta blockers should be taken with caution in individuals who also have co-existing conditions such asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or emphysema. Because propranolol inhibits both Beta-1 and Beta-2 receptors, it is a nonselective beta blocker.

Therefore, emphysema would alert the nurse of the need to use beta-adrenergic blockers cautiously
