What is visceral pain?

  • Visceral pain is the one you feel due to damage to internal organs and tissues such as the stomach, bladder, uterus, or rectum.
  • This is a type of nociceptive pain (damage to body tissues) and caused due inflammation, injury or pressure.
  • This type of pain is not clearly defined as it is difficult to locate but it occurs internally.
  • Examples of visceral pain include pain in the bladder, endometriosis, irritable bowel syndrome, menstrual pain and prostate pain.
  • Somatic pain occurs in the soft tissues like skin and muscles. It is more intense and easier to locate than the visceral pain.
