What is Biological Community?

The term "Biological Community" refers to the presence of a group or groups of interacting living organisms in a common geographic location. Coexistence of different organisms from different species can be found in such type of community.

  • For instance, a forest including soil microbes and fungi, along with animals and different plant species. Various biological elements go hand-in-hand into creating a biological community.
  • The variables in a biological  community include species diversity (the total number of species), species abundance (the total number of individuals in each species), and species interactions. Predation, mutualism, parasitism, and rivalry are some of these relationships. The process of these communities evolving over time is known as ecological succession.

In a biological community, most creatures depend on other organisms for their own nourishment, autotrophs being the exceptions. This interdependence of organisms for food and survival can be represented by the food chain, in which each organism resides at a certain level of the food chain known as the trophic level.
