The U.S. average footprint is approximately 3 times larger than the world's average footprint.

Ecological footprint is a tool that helps us to assess how humans are influencing the enviornment in a given country of region. It was developed by The Global Footprint Network. The ecological footprint is usually used with the biocapacity measure. In order to evaluate whether the ecosystem is capable of supporting present levels of resource consumption, the availability of natural resources (biocapacity) is compared to the demand for those resources (the footprint). Biocapacity and ecological footprint are typically represented in "per capita" numbers using the global hectare (gha) as the unit.

The world-average ecological footprint was 2.77 global hectares per person in 2017, whereas, U.S average ecological footprint was 8.04 global hectares per person in the same year i.e. 3 times larger than that of the world.
