The minimum amount of energy the body uses to maintain vital functions is known as the: basal metabolic rate (BMR).

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the minimum rate of energy expense compatible with life. It is measured in the supine position under ideal conditions of rest, fasting, inactivity, thermoneutrality as well as mental composure.

Depending on its usage, the basal metabolic rate (BMR) is normally expressed per minute, per hour or per day i.e. 24 hours.

On an average, a man has a BMR of about 7,100 kJ per day, whereas a woman has a BMR of about 5,900 kJ per day. BMR  is greatly influenced by total lean mass.
