Metabolic pathways that involve the degradation of large molecules to smaller ones are classified as catabolic pathways.
Catabolic pathways refer to those pathways which involve breakdown of nutrient molecules into such forms which may be usable (just like the building block). They function such way in order to release energy that is stored in the bonds of complex molecules, such as, glucose and fats.
In this process, the energy is either stored in molecules for later use, or released as heat. The citric acid cycle, the electron transport chain and glycolysis, are examples of catabolic pathways, which result into non-reversible reactions.
