The cultural and social interaction and exchange between the English settlers and the Indians was kind of mutual, at least for the first few decades. The period between the year 1620 when the Plymouth colony was formed, and the outbreak of first series of wars against British, was quite a peaceful one.

When the English came to India (during the Mughal era), they were  trying to observe and learn the Indian culture and its habits. Until and unless they understood each other, they would not be able to learn and understand a word of each other.

They tried acquainting themselves with the Indian language, culture, social issues while the Indians too were learning this new language and dressing style from British.
