During the fourteenth century, the catholic church came under increasing criticism because of two major reasons. The first was the continuous conflict between the church, that is, the pope and the European monarchs. The second major reason was the corruption within the church and the worldliness it was indulging in.
The pope's words were losing their veracity. Lack of leadership from some church leaders made the clergymen to challenge the power of the pope, simultaneously challenging the authority of the catholic church itself.
With time, the conflict in the church was becoming more and more political in nature, rather than being doctrinal.
