The Great Basin Desert, Mojave Desert, Sonoran Desert, and Chihuahuan Desert are the four principal deserts of North America. All of them are in the southwest of North America and generally correspond to the Basin and Range Province geological region.
The huge region known as the Basin and Range Province is made up of roughly 100 parallel mountain ranges that run north to south and the flat, arid regions (basins) that lie in between them. Approximately 30 million years ago, the earth's crust progressively warmed and strained, causing it to break along thousands of fault lines.
Desert distribution and causes. Near 30 degrees north latitude and 30 degrees south latitude, when the warm equatorial air starts to descend, are where the majority of the world's deserts are found. Large amounts of water from the surface of the land are vaporized by the dense, warming, descending air. The environment that results is quite dry.
