According to Hans Selye, resistance to stress is lowest at the "exhaustion" stage of the general adaptation syndrome.
What is general adaptation syndrome?
General adaptation syndrome (GAS) is a term used to describe how your body reacts to stress. Hans Selye, a physicist, was the first to notice the occurrence in 1946.
Some key features regarding general adaptation syndrome are-
- The initial stage of the general adaption syndrome. Your body gives a distress call to your brain during this time. Your brain reacts by sending a signal to the body, causing it to release chemicals known as glucocorticoids and adrenaline, which are also known as "fight or flight" hormones.
- The resistance stage follows the reaction stage. Throughout this stage, your body uses the parasympathetic system to try to reverse the changes that took place during the reaction stage.
- Stress takes a toll on your body, as well as the exhaustion stage develops after extended stress. This stage occurs when your body has been subjected to prolonged stress.
