Gestures is our primary means of communicating emotion
A gesture is a type of nonverbal communication in which observable bodily gestures express specific meanings, either in place of or with spoken words. Gestures include movements of the hands, face, or other body parts.
Gestures. Adaptors, symbols, and illustrators are the three primary categories of gestures (Andersen, 1999). Adaptors are physical behaviors and motions that signal internal states such as alertness or worry. Adaptors can be directed at the self, things, or other people.
Gesture reflects speakers' thoughts, frequently unsaid thoughts, and can thus be used to provide insight into cognition. By encouraging speakers to gesture, teachers, physicians, interviewers, and others can gain a deeper understanding of their communication partners.
