Spiritual music became an important social tool that slaves used to communicate with each other
Music is a powerful tool for changing people's lives. It has the power to transport someone from the depths of depression and hopelessness to a state of peace, joy, and optimism. It can also be a dangerous tool that degrades human life.
It is possible to debate and outline the dangers inherent in much of today's contemporary (secular) music, but that will not be my focus. I do want to make it clear, however, that what I'm about to say about more secular/contemporary music in no way implies that I support censorship in any form. Regardless of its more "worldly" (and in many ways dangerous) influence, I propose awareness rather than censorship.
