A person feels drowsy at night as the sleeping centre of our brain gets activated which is in the hypothalamus. Reading reduces stress and also distraction but excess reading at night affects the sleeping pattern.

How do we fall asleep?

The blinking of the eyes brings drowsiness and initiates the sleeping centre which is present in the hypothalamus part of the brain. It also acts as a biological clock and maintains the day-night rhythm.

Reading does not help in sleeping but it actually reduces distraction and helps to relax the mind. But excessive reading requires concentration and attention which is keeping the mind in attentive mode.

The blinking of eyes brings sleepiness as reading is making the eyes tired but it may happen the person will experience microsleep as Caitlyn is not putting down the book aside.

Also, the book reading requires light and light suppresses the melatonin level. All these ultimately affect and disturb the circadium rhythm.

Hence, Caitlyn is up staying late as she is continuously reading which is affecting her sleeping pattern.
