The small rooms in catacombs cubicula were frequently plastered and painted.

There are at least forty catacombs in and around Rome known as the Catacombs of Rome (Italian: Catacombe di Roma), some of which were only recently uncovered. Jews and followers of various pagan Roman religions were buried in catacombs beginning in the second century AD.

This was due to the ancient Roman prohibition on burials within a city as well as a result of overcrowding and a lack of land. Catacombs are most famous for Christian burials, either in separate catacombs or mixed together.

There are numerous sites, both Christian and not, strewn around the city, some of which are now covered by contemporary urban expansion, but the largest and possibly best known is the Christian Catacomb of Callixtus, located next to the Park of the Caffarella.
