At the age of 3 to 5 a child first wants to control and structure of his or her environment. This stage is called the Initiative vs Guilt.
From infancy to maturity, Erik Erikson argued that personality develops via eight stages of psychosocial development in a set order. The person goes through a psychological crisis at each level, which may or may not affect how their personality develops.
Between the ages of three and five, during the preschool years, is when the Initiative vs. Guilt stage takes place. By organizing activities, completing tasks, and overcoming obstacles, the youngster starts to exert control and influence over their environment. A sense of purpose is generated by success at this level. Children experience shame if their initiative is disregarded or discouraged, whether through criticism or control.
